UPTET — Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test
UPTET is the state-level teacher eligibility test conducted for Uttar Pradesh, generally by the UP Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC) on behalf of the UP Basic Education Board. Clearing UPTET does not itself give you a teaching job — it certifies that you’re eligible to apply when a recruitment exam such as UPSTET (Super TET) is announced.
Notification
The UPTET notification is usually released once a year on the official website, along with the detailed advertisement covering eligibility, application dates, fee, and exam schedule. Applications typically stay open for a few weeks, with separate windows for form correction and fee payment.
Eligibility & age limit
Paper 1 (Classes 1–5)
Senior secondary (12th) with at least 50% marks and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed/BTC), or equivalent qualification recognised by NCTE.
Paper 2 (Classes 6–8)
Graduation with a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education, or graduation with B.Ed, as per current NCTE norms.
Age limit
Broadly 18 to 35 years as per recent cycles, with relaxation for reserved categories per UP government rules. Confirm the exact limit in the current notification.
Exam pattern
UPTET is conducted offline (pen and paper), with 150 objective-type questions worth 150 marks in 150 minutes, across two papers — Paper 1 for primary-level teaching and Paper 2 for upper-primary level. Candidates aiming to teach both levels appear for both papers. There’s no negative marking, so it’s generally advised to attempt every question.

Candidates who meet the qualifying marks receive a UPTET eligibility certificate, which under current rules carries lifetime validity — you don’t need to re-take UPTET for future recruitment cycles once you’ve cleared it.
Answer key
A provisional answer key is usually released a few days to a couple of weeks after the exam, with a short window to raise objections against specific questions before the final key and result are prepared.
